Seeds For Your Bird Feeder

Bird feeders can an interesting year by attracting different kinds of birds but many people don’t know what to kinds of seeds are best to use. Oftentimes people just go to the grocery store and buy the cheap seed mix, but this may not be the best choice as a lot of the seeds are not appetizing to birds and will just end up on the ground. Here are some different types of seeds you might consider putting your bird feeder.


Black Oil Sunflower Seeds


These seeds look similar to sunflower seeds but they don’t have the white lines and are smaller in size. Fill up a feeder with these and you might see some birds in your yard that you have never even seen before as many different species are attracted to these seeds. birds like them because they are easier to open as they are softer and have a higher oil content.


Safflower


If you have a problem with squirrels getting into your birdfeeder then you might want to try filling it with sunflower seeds since these white colored seeds seem to be the only ones that squirrels don’t like. Birds like them though, and you might find that they attract Cardinals and even a Downey woodpecker or two.


Niger


These teeny tiny black seeds can be very expensive but they’re well worth it as they attract the most beautiful birds including goldfinches. You want to buy a tube feeder that have tiny holes but if you fill it up with these little seeds you might find a flock of goldfinches flitting about your feeder all day long.


White Millet


For ground feeding birds like sparrows, mourning doves and juncos you might try putting some white millet either in a lower platform Peter urges sprinkling it on the ground in your garden.
